New Trump order goes after trans students

On Jan. 29, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that bars schools that receive federal funding from allowing students to identify with the name and pronouns that best match their gender identity, The Advocate reported.

The order also prohibits the use of bathrooms and lockers by trans students that best fit their gender identity and bans them from playing on the most appropriate sports teams. Essentially, the order attempts to erase trans students altogether.

Lambda Legal McDonald/Wright Senior Attorney Nicholas Hite said in a statement, “Today, the Trump administration rolled out yet another executive order consisting of patently unconstitutional nonsense designed to demean transgender and all LGBTQ+ young people, deny their very existence, and cause them harm.

“And this time, it is actively putting transgender and nonbinary youth in harm’s way in our nation’s public schools. Compelling federally-funded schools to disrespect the identities of LGBTQ+ youth, particularly trans youth, not only opens them up to harassment, bullying, and abuse, but in fact encourages it. And forcing schools to teach a skewed and fictitious version of history that denies our nation’s past injustices compounds the lawlessness of this order.”

In a separate statement, U.S. Rep. Mark Takano, chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, said, “As a former teacher, I’m appalled by Donald Trump’s attempt to use the federal government to censor LGBTQI+ voices and stories in our schools and make LGBTQI+ students less safe. Every student deserves to be respected at school and receive an honest education, free from discrimination.”

A day earlier, Trump signed another order that attempts to ban federal funding or support for youth gender-affirming care, Axios noted.

Trump had repeatedly threatened to defund schools accused of teaching critical race theory and that accommodate transgender students. The secretaries of Education and Defense are ordered to create a plan for ending the so-called “indoctrination in K-12 education” within 90 days.
